Nowadays, water utilities face enormous demands concerning data management, internal processes and external response capability to regulating entities and clients.

Although many of these utilities have equipped themselves, over the last few years, with more or less sophisticated data management systems, the fact remains that these systems cover subjects in a sectional and generic way, unable to interact with each other.

The practical consequence is the building up of a great amount of available data but the production of information from this data is not efficient; furthermore, the whole reporting process is not effective, although very demanding in terms of elapsed production time. Additionally, there is a generalised difficulty in performing a critical data analysis to create added value and identify the causes of eventual problems or how to act preventively before problems arise.

The data management module of AQUASAFE provides a powerful tool to the water utilities, regarding compilation, analysis and report of gathered data within the different monitoring programs that these companies have implemented, namely the Water Quality Control Plan (PCQA), which is a legal requisite.

This computer tool’s development objective was to allow companies the speeding up of the entire data processing, originated in the different monitoring plans. Unlike other computer software already in use in some companies, this tool performs an effective data analysis, crosschecking several monitoring and analysis programs, data variability analysis along pipes, data verification according to updated applicable laws, interface with ERSAR (translated as Water and Residues Regulating Authority) and the automatic production of periodic reports.

The system was designed according to a client-server philosophy, with the ability to define access permissions by user. It was created bearing in mind the specific problems of water distribution companies operating in Portugal. Access to information is done in a simple intuitive way, allowing the identification of the measurement points on the geographically referenced network or in a simplified diagram form. It also allows access to data related with all monitoring programs.

In any case, the concept is sufficiently broad as to work in any system which deals with information management. Among others, these system characteristics stand out:

  • Creation and management of field sheets and sampling routes

  • Integration with a spatial network representation (easy search).

  • Value search along the network (for example, chlorine on a specific day)

  • Chart creation, customised with several filters (sampling programme, delivery point, origins, dates, etc.)

  • Automatic creation of reports in word and excel formats or open office, from templates created by the user (after configuration, reports are produced with 2 clicks)

  • Data import from xls files

  • Data import from xml files (for example: labway format).

  • Direct import of laboratory pdf bulletins

  • Interface with ERSAR base (campaign requisites import and reports export in compatible formats)
